Am I doing enough?
The question that's always on my mind these days
There are days where I wonder if I’m doing enough.
This weekend has been a mad dash to get my office put together, because I have a photojournalist coming over next week, and I would like to look like things are marginally more together than they feel like they are at the moment.
It’s been busy enough that I almost cancelled my early birthday lunch with a couple of dear friends, but I knew I’d regret it if I cancelled it.
We got to Hat Yai, the sun came out, and we spent the next two hours talking about what we’ve been doing in the wake of another January that felt like a year.
She’s been organizing at a school, making sure we have people ready to help kids trying to get home safely. How she’d barely missed being teargassed at yesterday’s peaceful protest.
I talked about spreading the word about our library board meeting such that we packed the entire room - and my friend who was on the board resigned in protest of the Moms For Liberty women on there actively ignoring and voting outside of the community’s interests.
She talked about emergency preparedness and divesting from companies harming all of us.
We all talked about how much we need the men around us to step up their activism.
We exchanged resources, talked about the things we heard going on, the things that were upsetting us, and how we were going to get more of our friends involved.
And I left so buoyed, so relieved, because I was reminded that we are not alone. We are building something new, piece by piece, and nothing can stop the good that is coming as a direct response to the chaos they are trying to bring down on us.
I am proud of how I am showing up in the face of all of this. Because while what I’m doing alone will never be enough, it doesn’t have to be - because we’re doing it together.
If you’re struggling right now, call your friend who gets it. Join Indivisible for easy actions you can start taking today. And since you’re here, here are some ways that I’d love to work together on this with you.
Ways to get involved:
- In case you’ve missed it, I’m running an edible garden planning workshop on Zoom 2/3-2/5. (If cost is an issue, hmu. Scholarships are available.)
- PDX/Vancouver folks: I’m cohosting a seed swap gardening get together at Kindred 2/15. It won’t be the only live event happening, so get on the Hearth & Hollow email list if you want in on those.
- A friend and I are working on a divestment guide to make it really easy for all of us to stop giving bad people money. We’re going to be looking for contributors, so if that’s something you’re into, hmu.
